Kayaking the Everglades

Joan and I are planning to take our kayaks down to southern Florida in January. We've kayaked in the spring-fed rivers in the central part of the state - the Myakka, Sulfur Springs, Alexander & Juniper Springs, and a few others, but we've never been farther south than the Myakka. Has anyone had experience in the Everglades? Can you recommend a place (motel or B&B) to establish as a base for five or six days? We're not planning to camp or do any major expeditions; just day trips from the base. Any recommendations regarding books, outfitters, etc.?

I haven't had the opportunity to kayak yet, but I believe that it will be the next evolution of my outdoor explorations.
I currently love to float in canoes, and have only been in stage 3 rapids, looking forward to the stage 4 and possibly five rapids if i ever have a death wish

Hi I am a Kayak Aholic

Hi my name is Sage and I am a Kayak Aholic.

It all started about 4 years ago when I went kayaking for the first time as an adult. Even though I paddled on just flat water that first time I was addicted! Soon I found myself building my first kayak and working a part time second job at a kayak store.

It went on from there to setting up and leading trips out to the local Islands. Playing tag with freighters on long open crossings, frolicking with wildlife and exploring many sea caves. Then my friends I got a dependable roll. This opened new worlds to me bringing me to wiled frothing rock choked rivers and the ever-changing surf zone.

Now I spend time every weekend on the water, compete in every surf competition and plan to surf in other countries next year. I have introduced people to this addiction and have even influenced people to build their own kayaks!

I am sorry to say that it is hard to park in my one car garage (I live in a apartment) due to the size of the fleet of boats.
I have;

Touring:
Synergy LP
Night Herron

WW
Ace 5.1

Surf
Dave Intz special (currently living at another home waiting for sale)
I-Rip (oops! gave that one away yesterday)
Gecko
Marauder
ICY Mako
Wave Master

I still feel that I need a creak boat and another HP surf kayak.
As you see I am truly addicted to kayaking!

I am waiting for the tide to drop today before I take the Marauder out for the first time. It looks like 2-3 foot swells today building to 7-9 tomorrow. I am dreaming of the possible 18+ surf at Jalama the first week of December (the expression session of the year).

Well I can stand it no longer! I am off to surf!

Sage

G'day, just thought i would introduce myself my name is Dave and i have been paddling for 4 and bit years. I'm from Tasmania, anyone familiar with the rivers downunder. Awsome whitewater.
Anyway i posted a pic one of my fav rivers, this is the Cataract Gorge in Launceston, Tasmania. @ about 1500cfs?, unfortunatly this river is Dam controlled. Sick when its running. It gets real crazy @ about 3000cfs when the dam spills.

Happy paddling
Dave
